Barn Quilts of Shawano County Project Coordinator Jim Leuenberger (white shirt) and his wife, Irene, explained the ins and outs of the popular project to those who attended his talk Nov. 11 at the Poy Sippi Public Library. There are now almost 400 quilts on barns throughout the county, a number Leuenberger had never imagined. He and his wife handpaint all the quilts, many of which have themes based on nature, animals, the military, or patriotism. Leuenberger has been featured in many national magazines and even the New York Times. If you want to take a tour of the county quilts, maps are available from the Shawano County Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center. The Poy Sippi library also has some visitor’s guides featuring the maps that are available to the public.
